Bull Run Lake is situated upstream of the headwaters of the Bull Run River at an approximate elevation of 3,174 feet above sea level. It was formed between 6,900 and 15,000 years ago by a massive landslide. There is no surface connection, but water percolates through the landslide deposits to emerge as the headwaters of the Bull Run River. It is used on occasion to augment the municipal water supply for the City of Portland. Coastal cutthroat trout are the only fish documented to be living in the lake.
